Pupil Leadership

At New Brancepeth Primary Academy, pupil voice is paramount in guiding the way that we shape our school and meet the needs of children in our community.  It is also a way in which children can take on responsibility, demonstrate citizenship, build character and prepare themselves for life beyond school.

Student Leadership Roles

At the start of each academic year, children are either invited to apply for roles and subsequently elected through a democratic class vote (in the case of School Councillors & Digital Leaders) or they volunteer for other leadership roles:

School Council Representative

To represent the voice of New Brancepeth pupils and to ensure that decisions made are in the best interests of the students.

Digital Leader

To represent the voice of New Brancepeth pupils and to offer support, advice and guidance to wider pupils when online both in school and at home.

House Captain

To represent their House on behalf of the other children in school and to encourage and motivate their team during House events.

Vice House Captain

To work alongside the House Captain, supporting them, and representing the House in their absence.

Buddy

Tasked with managing conflict on a break time and supporting peers, as well as promoting and organising initiatives to promote ‘getting along’.  Our Buddies also take a lead on supporting children who may be upset or feeling unwell.

Playground Leader

Responsible for outdoor play and learning projects, activities and initiatives and the organisation of resources.

Librarian

Responsible for the issuing and returning books, specifically in KS2, under the direction of class teachers.

Rainbow Representatives

Our Rainbow Reps meet to discuss ways in which we can make our school more inclusive and promote equity, diversity and inclusion throughout school.

Eco Warriors

Responsible for supporting with making our school more sustainable and promoting biodiversity within our school grounds.

School Council representatives, Digital Leaders, Playground Leaders, Rainbow Representatives and Eco Warriors meet at least fortnightly with their link member of staff to actively contribute to meetings and projects and be role models to other pupils.  To fulfil their duties, they are periodically required to gather student voice through class meetings and to feedback updates regularly.  Across the year, there is time built in to gather pupil feedback and for School Council to then feedback back their class or to the whole school via assembly.

Other leaders meet with their link teacher at least half termly to implement any new initiatives and to address any issues arising in their role.
