Music
Intent
Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. A high-quality music curriculum supports children to explore their own creativity through performing, composing and wider listening and engagement. Doing this can support children to develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation of musical culture and provide a form of self-expression. At New Brancepeth Primary Academy, we believe that music plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore, we aim to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, both in class and to an audience, and to develop the skills to critically appreciate a variety of musical forms. Learning throughout the music curriculum is gradual and progressive, which allows children to consolidate and secure their understanding and skills.
The EYFS framework is structured very differently to the National Curriculum as it is organised across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas. The most relevant statements for Music are taken from the following areas of learning:
- Expressive Art & Design
- Physical Development
- Communication & Language
- Mathematics
Within our EYFS, children’s musical skills are challenged through ongoing, levelled continuous provision and targeted implicit and explicit challenges linked to the EYFS framework. Music contributes to a child’s personal and social development. Activities such as counting songs foster a child’s mathematical ability and songs from different cultures increase a child’s cultural awareness and understanding.
Our whole school curriculum is planned on a two-year cycle; this allows us to support mixed- age classes across school. Our curriculum is also linked, where appropriate, to our core themes of family, community and the wider world through targeted Project Outcomes across the whole curriculum. These are identified within each topic. e.g. community tea dance and class assemblies.
